Chess Victoria is a non-profit organization, incorporated in the State of Victoria, Australia, under the Victorian Government's Associations Incorporation Act 1981. It is one of the seven State or Territory chess associations that comprise the Australian Chess Federation Inc (ACF). The ACF is recognized by the World Chess Federation (FIDÉ) as the governing body for chess in Australia.

Chess Victoria  is an organization of affiliated clubs and provides a range of services, privileges and other benefits to groups of players who apply successfully for status as an affiliated club.
CV rules define two levels of affiliation: provisional affiliation and full affiliation.
The CV Executive committee may grant provisional affiliation to a club that agrees to meet requirements such as the supply of up-to-date information about the club, compliance with CV rules and policies, and payment of the annual club affiliation fee, as set each year by club representatives at the CV annual general meeting.
A club that has been provisionally affiliated for 12 months may be granted full affiliation at a CV annual or special general meeting.
